Assistance Offered American Public University System is offering a full semester of study at no charge for up to 2,500 students affected by Hurricane Katrina. The scholarships are for students enrolled in colleges in the Gulf area forced to cancel fall classes, and which do not offer distance education courses. Priority will be given to students who have already paid tuition to their institutions for enrollment in the fall semester. The scholarships provide up to 12 hours of transfer credits (four 8-week courses) for classes starting in October or November. Students must enroll by Sept. 25 for October classes, and Oct. 30 for November classes. Students also can receive a 15 percent discount on new or used books purchased through its book vendor, MBS Direct.

Students are encouraged to review their school’s policy and degree program requirements regarding transfer credits. The University System will work with the students and their schools to facilitate this process.

Assistance Offered We would like to offer these tens of thousands of students planning to attend college this fall, who have been unexpectedly displaced as a result of Hurricane Katrina, a unique and life-changing opportunity: the chance to have the experience of a lifetime through a Cross-Cultural Solutions international volunteer or intern program during the fall semester. This scholarship can be used toward participation in a Cross-Cultural Solutions Volunteer Abroad or Intern Abroad program during the fall 2005 semester.

German Academic Exchange Service (representing all German universities), New York, other
Assistance Offered Ten scholarships / grants for study and research in Germany. Displaced undergraduate and graduate students and faculty members may apply for funding to carry out a short term period of study or research in Germany. Normal application deadlines have been waived and conditions modified to accommodate for the exceptional circumstances. The scholarships may be used for periods of study and research in Germany between now and January 31, 2006 and will be awarded on a rolling basis. In addition to these scholarships for individuals, DAAD will provide 100,000 euros to German universities to help them fund student and faculty exchange with their partner universities in the affected area. Affected US institutions are encouraged to get in touch with their German partner universities to assess needs and opportunities.

Ludwig Maximilian University Munich, Munich, other
Assistance Offered In response to the devastation of Hurricane Katrina, Ludwig Maximilian University Munich will help students whose home institution is unable to conduct classes for Fall, 2005. Five students will be admitted as Visiting Students into courses for which they are academically qualified and where spaces are available until January 2006 (at which time they may wish to return to their home institutions). Tuition will be waived for these students and scholarships of € 400,- per month are available. The University will provide students accommodation for the five scholarship recipients (to be paid out of the monthly stipend). Travel costs to Germany will be covered by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD). Knowledge of German is preferable, but not a condition for admission. LMU offers various classes throughout the whole range of subjects in English and hosts two junior-year-abroad programs as well as German language classes for beginners. Please indicate your level of German with your application.
